Rubber Band Ligation

What is Rubber Band Ligation?

Rubber band ligation is a procedure in which the hemorrhoid is tied off at its base with rubber bands, cutting off the blood flow to the hemorrhoid. The hemorrhoid then shrinks and dies and, in about a week, falls off. You will not know when this happens; although, you may have some bleeding.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Usually 3 to 5 treatments are required at two to three week intervals to obtain the desired result.

What Should I Do Before Treatment?

  • Contact your insurance company to understand your policy and its provisions with regard to referrals and prior authorization of treatment.
  • One hour before each treatment, take one Fleet Enema.

What Should I Expect After Treatment?

You may feel pain and have a sensation of fullness and pressure in the rectum or you may feel as if you need to have a bowel movement.
  • Take sitz baths (sitting in a warm tub of water) two to three times per day for three or four days after the treatment and whenever necessary.
  • You may have some bleeding off and on with the bowel movement for two weeks after treatment. This is normal and should be expected.
  • Avoid taking aspirin as it may may increase bleeding. If you need a pain reliever during your treatment, take Tylenol or consult your pharmacist for other pain relievers which do not contain aspirin. If you are on aspirin therapy prescribed by another physician, consult your doctor before stopping aspirin therapy.
Contact our office immediately if you develop high fever or severe urinary tract symptoms.
