6 Ways to Reduce the Risk of Colon Cancer

According to the stats, colon cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States, with more than 140,000 people getting diagnosed of this specific cancer each year!

And more than a million people, men and women, live with the history of this disease. However, there are ways to prevent colon cancer which are so effective that they can prevent 75% of the reported cases!

Here we discuss six such preventative measures that you can take in order to keep yourself at bay from this life threatening disease.

1- Get Screened Regularly

A regular screening for colon cancer can reduce the risk of the cancer being diagnosed at a later stage. The single most important and effective way to prevent yourself from this disease is by undergoing regular colonoscopy to ensure that there are no abnormal growths, known as polyps, in your colon that can convert into cancer.

2- Maintain Healthy Weight

Being overweight is another thing that you need to avoid. One of the risks overweight people are exposed to is the risk of colon cancer. So, when you start to age, it’s necessary that you maintain the weight you used to have when you were young.

3- Don’t Smoke

Smoking can be the cause of almost every single disease you can find in the medical dictionary. And it’s the most common cause of colon cancer as well. Aside from colon cancer, smoking is the major cause of at least 13 other types of cancer as well. So, if you’re into smoking then quitting is the biggest favor you can do to your body and health.

4- Physically Active

You need to keep yourself busy and active in your daily life. It reduces the risk of many diseases including colon cancer. Exercising, cycling and jogging are some of the best options you can pursue on daily on basis in order to keep yourself healthy. You just have to take out 30 minutes out of your daily life and spare them for your choice of exercise.

5- Drink Moderately

Alcohol consumption is another cause of several types of cancers. Reducing it to low levels can be a precautionary step you can take. If you don’t drink then it’s the best, and if you’re a heavy drinker then the amount of alcohol consumption needs to get low immediately.

6- Eat Less Red Meat & Take Vitamins

Eating too much red meat like hamburgers, steaks and pork is also a cause of colon cancer. But if you’re fond of having processed meat like bacon, sausage and bologna then that might raise the risk even more. You need to reduce eating red meat to not more than three servings in a week. If you’re able to reduce it further, that’s even better. On the other hand, make sure you’re taking vitamin D and calcium supplements daily. A combination of both is an excellent preventative measure against colon cancer.
